Happy 1st Birthday, Dean

My friend Tom asked me to make his son's first birthday cake this past weekend. I think I like making kids' birthday cakes the best out of anything. They are so cute and fun. They asked for a 2 tiered cake with fondant accents. Here's the final product.

Of course, every 1 year old needs a smash cake.

Happy birthday, Baby Dean!

Happy December Birthdays

Here's my take on a December themed birthday cake. I made a 3D Christmas tree out of none other than Rice Krispie Treats, as one of the December birthday girls is a big fan of RKT, and not so much of cake. What can I say, I aim to please!

Go Dragons!

My 5 year old son, Joshua, was on his first soccer team this fall. The team decided to call themselves the Dragons, and had a great season. For their last game, I thought it would be fun to make a soccer cake for the team and their families to share.

Way to go, Dragons!

Happy Birthday, Robert

My day job is working as a paralegal. I've worked in law for over 12 years now. For a long time I did personal injury work at Bohm & Jones. One of my former attorneys celebrated his birthday in early December and I was asked to make his birthday cake. I thought it would be fun to put the firm logo on the cake, and of course being around Christmas, it just HAD to wear a Santa hat!

Snowflake Baby Shower

My dear, dear friend Jen is about to have her first sweet little baby, Matthew. Jen's story is so very special, as the baby she's about to have is adopted. It's called a Snowflake Adoption or embryo adoption. You can read more about it here. These little babies are called snowflakes because each one is individual and unique, and they're frozen. :)

I was so honored to be able to make Jen's baby shower cake. The baby shower was snowflake themed, which was perfect seeing as the shower was at the start of the Christmas season.

The cake was designed to resemble a patchwork blanket, complete with fringe on the ends.

The snowflakes are piped out of royal icing.

I also made some snowflake sugar cookies for the shower. I decorated each one to be unique. They turned out so cute and were a huge hit at the party.

I just can't wait to meet Baby Matthew in just a few weeks!

Fun with Fondant

I recently have learned so many new fun fondant and gum paste techniques. Fondant and gum paste are so fun to work with. Gum paste flowers look so real and are so beautiful.

I Feel so Official!

As I mentioned in a previous post, November is a popular month to be born. I am one of those many November babies. This year, my boys got me a very special birthday present. Check it out!

Its a personalized business card case!

Wow! I feel so officially in business! Let's get caking!

Happy 1st Birthday, Gabe!

My good friends' little boy, Gabe, had his big first birthday at the end of November. Gabe has got to be the happiest baby I've ever had the pleasure of knowing. He's just personifies joy! I got to make his first birthday cake. They wanted something simple, but that would go along with the party decor. Because the decor had fun multi-colored letters, I seized the opportunity to use my new fondant letter molds!

November Birthday Cake

November seems to be a big month for birthdays! Here is my take on a November themed birthday cake. My husband calls it my candy-cornucopia cake.

Happy Birthday Buzzcation!

I have recently learned there's not much you can't do with Rice Krispie Treats. They are a cake decorator's dream! You can mold them into three dimensional shapes, you can cut shapes out of them, and with a bit of royal icing, they will hold any shape. They're awesome!

I was recently asked to collaborate on a large cake project, which was to serve at least 200 people, for a birthday party for a company called Buzzcation. We came up with the idea of putting a three dimensional Buzzcation logo on top of the cake, using this magical treat. Because Buzzcation's business is directly involved with social networking, we also included the Twitter bluebird. I accepted the challenge of creating these logos.

Here's the Buzzcation logo:

and the Twitter bluebird:

And here is the finished cake:

My friend Paula of Sinfully Sweet Cakes and Confections decorated the cake. The cake and logos were a big hit at the party! Happy birthday, Buzzcation!
